The Internet Library of Early Journals (ILEJ) is a joint project by the Universities of Birmingham,Leeds, Manchester and Oxford, conducted under the auspices of the eLib Programme. It has digitised substantial runs of eighteenth and nineteenth-century journals, and these images are now available on the Internet together with their associated bibliographic data.
There are four journals available: Gentleman's Magazine, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Notes and Queries and Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. The Builder and Annual Register are due to be added. At least 20 consecutive years is the minimum held of any of the journals. This collection may be expanded by the addition of longer runs and/or more titles.
The ILEJ project is concerned exclusively with early UK journals. The journals used are from a wide subject range, covering science and technology as well as the arts, and have a perceived user demand in the higher education sector. They have a diversity of article formats and page sizes in differing typefaces print and paper quality and are all available from the consortium libraries.
