Jstor, the digital archive collection of core scholarly journals available on the World Wide Web, has announced that the Phase I collection is now complete. The total number of journals now accessible online is 117, covering 15 different subject areas.

The President of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, William G. Bowen conceived the idea for Jstor, which would convert back issues of journals into electronic formats and allow savings in space in libraries and also improve access. Jstor is provided by Mimas at Manchester Computing, University of Manchester, UK.

Now that Phase I is complete Jstor will concentrate on two main areas. Firstly the development of discipline-specific clusters, beginning with the General Science Collection which will contain 1.4 million pages of scientific journal literature. Secondly, several new subject areas will be added to the Phase I collection with the inclusion of new journal titles.
