LIMB, established in 1977, is a machine‐readable data base covering all aspects of the education of library and information users. It is based on the collection of educational materials gathered at Loughborough University of Technology Library as part of the work of the British Library‐appointed Information Officer for User Education. The National Lending Library for Science and Technology had started collecting these items comprehensively in 1971 and they were all available on loan or as photocopies. When LIMB was introduced it was decided that this collection should be transferred from the British Library Lending Division to Loughborough and incorporated into the newly established collection of user education materials. This collection totalled some 450 handouts produced by librarians from 45 libraries in higher and further education establishments. Total LIMB holdings currently exceed 3,000 items.
