Ovid Technologies recently announced the release of its Ovid OpenLinksTMexternal full-text linking solution, for purchase by Ovid institutional bibliographic database subscribers. Together with Ovid's own aggregated and fast-growing full-text database, Journals@Ovid, OpenLinks completes Ovid's vision of providing unified access to the widest range of scientific, technical,and medical full-text information in the industry.
OpenLinks is a software add-on for Ovid Web Gateway Version 4.1.0 that enables users to link from search results in their Ovid bibliographic databases to full-text journal articles located on remote publishers' Web sites. Ovid uses a dynamic linking model to develop external full-text linking, meaning that full-text links are generated in real time, from information ("metadata")contained in bibliographic records. This approach is inherently more up-to-date and reliable than "production" or "database style" external full-text linking models, in which a database of links is produced by the vendor and periodically updated.
To implement OpenLinks, a customer purchases electronic subscriptions to full-text journals from the publisher, and the OpenLinks software from Ovid. Next, the customer provides a list of basic e-journal information to Ovid Customer Support for implementation. Once OpenLinks are configured, live links to external full-text articles are created and added to Ovid search results.
OpenLinks completes Ovid's electronic document delivery solution,complementing the company's highly successful flagship product, Journals@Ovid– a 100 per cent searchable full-text database containing nearly 400 journal titles from over 60 different publishers, with new journals and publishers being added continuously.
