ExtraMED biomedical periodicals library

Keywords: Electronic publishing, Databases, Journal publishing

The ExtraMED database is issued on a monthly CD-ROM, which contains the full-text, as page images, of approximately 300 Third World biomedical journals. Ten disks are issued each production year, and indexes accumulate. About 30,000 articles had been included in ExtraMED by July 2000. Taking its name from the fact that it comprises journals that are "extra" to MEDLINE, ExtraMED focuses on journals that are largely excluded from the international indexes. The ExtraMED Consortium of Journals was originally selected through the regional Index Medicus projects of the World Health Organisation. It comprises the best biomedical journals in the developing world, and is by far the largest full-text source of such literature.

The ExtraMED Web site, which is to be used for document delivery and to carry information about Third World biomedical journals, was scheduled to open at the end of 2000 at http://www.extramed.com
