Scheme aims to improve structural safety

A new scheme to reduce the risk of future Ronan Point or Charles de Gaulle Airport style building disasters has been launched. Confidential Reporting on Structural Safety (CROSS) allows engineers to learn from past mistakes and eliminate potential problems. CROSS will analyse the information given, identify trends and publish its findings regularly, using real examples. A key principle of the new scheme will be to remove any details which would make it possible to identify the individual who has reported their concerns, their employer, the location of the project or any other material which would compromise the confidential nature of the scheme. CROSS is supported by the Health and Safety Executive, Government departments such as the Department of Trade and Industry and Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and bodies such as the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers. It is run by the Standing Committee on Structural Safety, the highly influential body which identifies trends and developments which might contribute to structural risks.
