A building might require repair after suffering structural damage from accident, design error, overloading, relative settlement or attack from the elements to such an extent that it becomes unserviceable or even unsafe and a hazard to those around it. Some of the detailed techniques of repair are discussed below but which, if any, are to be adopted would not be decided until a thorough investigation had been made to discover and, it is hoped, eliminate, the reasons for the damage. This might show a need for additional structural members or that existing members would require enlarging or merely that the building had to be made to conform more exactly to the original design.
