The problems of conservation have affected Venice for far longer than most cities and have been dealt with in a variety of ways. The major task, that of saving Venice as a whole from the depredations of the acqua alta (the tidal waters which inundate the low lying parts of the city with increasing frequency), is not one on which I am qualified to write, but I am certainly in favour of it. The problem of industrial effluent from Mestre, air‐borne and water‐borne, seems to be decreasing, and the problem of pollution by tourism is one for which I have some suggested help, which may appear in book form in the not too distant future.
