Special issue on The gendering of entrepreneurship: theoretical and empirical insights

Article Type: Call for papers From: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour & Research, Volume 17, Issue 3

Guest Editors: Dr Julia Rouse, Manchester Metropolitan UniversityLorna Treanor, RVC, University of London, andDr Emma Fleck, University of Ulster

The Editors of this special issue are announcing a call for papers that seeks to enhance our understanding of entrepreneurship as a gendered process. The primary aim of the special issue is to further explore gender theory as a necessary means of conceptualising entrepreneurship and understanding how entrepreneurship experiences vary. This follows from criticism of the entrepreneurship literature for adopting a gender-neutral perspective (Marlow et al., 2009) and failing to engage with theories of gender when sex differences are researched(Lansky, 2000). We seek papers that illuminate the gender assumptions, and privileges, on which mainstream entrepreneurship theory and practice are premised. We call on authors to show how analyses of practices and resources related to gender divisions can augment or challenge existing entrepreneurship theory, creating deeper understanding of female and male entrepreneurship. Papers drawing on any theory of gender are welcome; from the postmodern to realist.

Please note that the Editors are seeking contributions that advance our theoretical understanding of entrepreneurship. Papers can be purely theoretical or theory-driven empirical work, using qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods. Empirical papers that inform us about sectoral, spatial and/or time variations in the gendering of entrepreneurship will be of particular interest;for example, sectoral or international comparative studies and longitudinal or historical research. This comparative research should extend entrepreneurship theory by informing us about how entrepreneurship is practised and institutionalised differently under local gender regimes. Papers that make this added contribution will be given preference over studies that, while competently executed, simply test existing theory in new contexts. The Editors are happy to offer advice on abstracts prior to the main submission deadline.

Potential contributions may include, but should not be limited to, the effect on entrepreneurship of:

  • The gendering of institutions (e.g. education or welfare systems, family, labour market, etc.) that shape access to resources and normative practices. This may include an examination of gendering processes in entrepreneurship education, research, training and/or policy.

  • Discourses of gender: for example, how do discourses of gender and enterprise interrelate, reproduce and innovate? Can entrepreneurship support and realise emancipatory gender discourses?

  • The gender practices of individuals and networks; what types of masculinities and femininities are most prevalent in entrepreneurship and what are the outcomes for entrepreneurs performing gender differently?

  • Sex and gender differences in enterprise leadership (female- or male-led entrepreneurship, co- preneurship, team-led enterprise, family enterprise and intrapreneurship).

The special issue may also include studies that inform us about methodological challenges and solutions to researching the gendering of entrepreneurship.
