Cultural change and lodestones in the British police

Keith Grint joined Warwick Business School in January 2009 as a Professor of Leadership. Prior to this, he was a Professor of Defence Leadership at the Cranfield University and also taught at the Defence Academy in Shrivenham. Previously, he was a Professor of Leadership Studies and the Director of the Lancaster Leadership Centre at the Lancaster University Management School. Before that, he was the Director of Research at the Saïd Business School and a Fellow in Organizational Behaviour at the Templeton College, University of Oxford. Keith spent ten years in industry before switching to an academic career. He is a founding co-editor of the journal Leadership published by Sage (www.sagepub.co.uk), and founding co-organizer of the International Conference in Leadership Research. He remains a Visiting Research Professor at the Lancaster University, an Associate Fellow of the Saïd Business School, and Templeton College, and a Visiting Professor at the Leiden University. His books include The Sociology of Work 3rd edition (2005); Management: A Sociological Introduction (1995); Leadership (ed.) Clare Holt completed her doctorate at the Warwick Business School, funded by the Vice Chancellor’s Special Award. She conducted her research in leadership and the importance of relationships and engaging individuals through the power of narratives and common language. Part of her studies included being the principal researcher for the Warwick Commission on Directly Elected Mayors and City Leadership in English Local Government. Clare also has degrees from Bournemouth and Aston Universities and has worked extensively in customer/client service roles within the hotel, automotive and finance industries before working in Air Traffic Services with NATS Ltd (formerly National Air Traffic Services) for seven years, where she spent most of her career at Farnborough Airport in Hampshire. As well as air traffic controlling, Clare managed and completed several projects including unit investigation procedures, hazard and risk analysis and open reporting. Before commencing her doctoral studies at Warwick, Clare worked as a Research Assistant looking at Total Place and Big Society in Local Government, as well as organizational change within Dorset Police. She was extensively involved in the construction of the Continuous Professional Development program for the College of Policing’s (formerly National Policing Improvement Agency) High Potential Development Scheme and she was the principal researcher in the evaluation research for the scheme. Since commencing and recently completing her doctoral studies, Clare has been facilitating and teaching aspects of human error, blame culture, just culture and team (crew) resource management, as well as constructive dissent and aspects of Keith Grint’s work on wicked problems and clumsy solutions. She has been involved in programs with the Civil Service Learning (Roffey Park), College of Policing, NHS Scotland, NHS England, Emirates, Northamptonshire Police, Royal College of Nursing, various Social Services and Children’s Services departments, Cambridge University Executive Education, Said Business School (Paris), Oxford University Executive Education, University of Warwick Executive Education and other public and private organizations.

Peter Neyroud is a Lecturer in Evidence-based Policing. He has been at the institute since 2010, following a 30-year career in the police service. He has been a resident scholar at the Jerry Lee Centre for Experimental Criminology managing a major research program, Operation Turning Point; a randomized controlled trial testing offender desistance policing. He has taught senior police leaders and advised governments across the world and in the UK on criminal justice reform. His research interests center on field experiments in policing, pre-court diversion, crime harm and the implementation and leadership of change in criminal justice agencies. Peter served for 30 years as a police officer in Hampshire, West Mercia and as a Chief Constable of Thames Valley. He set up and ran the National Policing Improvement Agency as CEO. In 2010, he carried out the “Review of Police Leadership and Training” which led to the establishment of the new “National College of Policing,” in 2012. He has been an independent reviewer of the Parole Board, a member of the Sentencing Guidelines Council and on both the National Policing and National Criminal Justice Boards. He is the Vice-Chair of the Internet Watch Foundation. He was awarded the Queens Police Medal in 2004 and a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2011.
