S.A. Capper, P.M. Ginter and L.E. SwayneSage Publications2001ISBN 0 761 92318 7

This book offers students the opportunity to develop and practise the skills needed in order to make difficult public health decisions. It presents 15 public health case studies that address a wide array of challenging and complex public health issues. These case studies attempt to vicariously place the reader in a position in which he or she is required to size up the situation and suggest some action for the organisation. This case approach provides students with a perspective concerning the complexity of the issues that public health organisations face, practice in discerning critical problems and opportunities, application of theory, and an understanding of the inter-relatedness of organisational and public health core functions.

The cases are based on field research conducted in a variety of public health agencies. Many have been co-authored by public health practitioners. The cases encompass all of the core public health disciplines and engage the student in integrating these disciplines into management and leadership practice.

The first section of the book supplies the tools needed to research, analyse and present cases orally. It includes a brief primer on health-care finance and a helpful template that guides students through the process of thinking through and making decisions in complex public health situations. The second section provides descriptive information about the US Health-Care System and the US Public Health System, so students have an understanding of the external forces that influence public health practice.
