Europe - Joint Commission International branches out in Europe

The Joint Commission International (JCI) opened a European office on February 3, 2005.The President/CEO and the Managing Director of JCI and the President of the US arm of JCI, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organisations (JCAHO) attended the opening of the new office, which is based in Ferney-Voltaire, France, near Geneva.

JCI extends the mission of JCAHO worldwide. Through both international consultation and accreditation, JCI helps to improve the quality of patient care in many nations. JCI has extensive international experience working with public and private health care organizations and local governments in more than 40 countries. JCI was established in 1997 as a division of Joint Commission Resources, Inc., a private, not-for-profit affiliate of JCAHO.

International accreditation. Launched in 1999, JCI’s accreditation program helps international health care organizations, public health agencies, health ministries and others evaluate, improve and demonstrate the quality of patient care in their nations.

The standards used for the accreditation process were developed by a 16-member international task force, representing seven major world regions. The standards set uniform, achievable expectations for structures, processes and outcomes for hospitals. The accreditation process is designed to accommodate specific legal, religious and cultural factors within a country.

International consulting. JCI provides international consulting services for:

  • accreditation preparation – prepares organizations for survey by strengthening clinical and operational areas;

  • operations development and improvement – technical assistance to develop the facilities and management systems of world-class health care organizations that seek to operate according to JCI accreditation standards; and

  • evaluation system development – assistance for other countries or regional groups to develop their own evaluation system that can be used for accreditation, licensure, credentialing or other regulatory purposes or evaluation of individual facilities or systems.

JCI consultants have experience in a variety of international health care settings and expertise in medicine, nursing, management, strategic planning,facility planning, accreditation, managed care and other specialties. International consulting services have been provided in more than 40 countries including the Bahamas, Brazil, Hungary, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain and Syria.
