Purpose

While previous studies have rarely highlighted how socio-demographic, external and mental factors have a significant effect on the quality of life in disaster victims, respectively, this study highlights it.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs the hierarchical linear regression (HLR) based on the 2022 Disaster Victims Panel Survey in South Korea.

Findings

Government, region and neighbor support play different roles in the types of the quality of life. Second, PTSD, depression and anxiety also exert a different effect on the quality of life. Third, government, region and neighbor support still exert a significant impact on the quality of life, while PTSD, depression and anxiety are the stage 3 models. Fourth, socio-demographic variables are differently associated with the quality of life. Therefore, governments and policymakers should develop disaster policies and programs for disaster victims based on the effects of socio-demographic, external and mental factors, respectively.

Originality/value

To the best of my knowledge, this study is the first article exploring how socio-demographic, external and mental factors play a significant role in the quality of life of disaster victims, respectively, by employing econometric models.
