Phung, O.J., Scholle, J.M., Talwar, M. and Coleman, C.I.,Effect of noninsulin antidiabetic drugs added to metformin therapy on glycemic control, weight gain, and hypoglycemia in type 2 diabetes,JAMA,2010,Vol. 303,pp. 1410-1418

This review assessed different classes of non-insulin antidiabetic drugs, given alongside metformin therapy, in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus not controlled by metformin alone. The authors concluded that all classes of drug were associated with similar glycated haemoglobin A1c reductions, but differed in their associations with weight gain and risk of hypoglycaemia. These conclusions are likely to be reliable.
