Sustainable affordable housing addresses the needs of low- and middle-income households while tackling environmental challenges. However, there is limited understanding of Malaysian homebuyers’ perspectives, particularly on technological sustainability alongside environmental, social and economic criteria. This study aims to examine homebuyers’ views on sustainable affordable housing across these criteria, considering sociodemographic factors.
A mixed-methods sequential explanatory approach combined quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews. Questionnaires were distributed to B40 and M40 homebuyers in the Klang Valley, yielding 316 responses, complemented by interviews with seven housing experts to validate findings.
Logistic regression analysis developed 30 models, revealing that positive attitudes towards sustainable housing are more common among female, Indian, married, older-generation and M40 homebuyers.
These insights enable developers to design targeted marketing strategies and customise projects for different demographics. Aligning sustainability practices with these preferences can enhance market uptake and satisfaction, offering valuable guidance for promoting sustainable affordable housing in Malaysia.
