For as long as I can remember, the year 2000 has been the threshold of the future. For those of us destined to spend much of our lives in the twentieth century — or any time in it at all — those years would, by definition, be spent in the past. The cars of the future would be coming in the year 2000 (the number being written out to make it seem even more amazing and futuristic).
