One of the most difficult tasks in developing an RFP for a library automation system is ascertaining the appropriate performance requirements. This is a critical function since failure to put enough teeth in the RFP will almost surely result in an under‐sized system, which will be plagued with performance problems throughout its life. On the other hand, including unreasonable performance demands will unnecessarily drive up the cost of the system.
