Maintains that the image of the library as merely a place where people go to read books is obsolete now that automated services are so widespread. Looks at electronic journals, formerly almost all in ASCII format, although a new journal is to be digitized and include diagrams,tables and pictures etc. Points out that digitization is perhaps the best way to facilitate enhanced access to information currently hidden in books. Considers the problems that publishers will face in controlling access and tracking use in order to collect revenues, as well as potential problems of indexing.
