Purpose

This study aims to propose an integrative approach for prioritizing the critical success factors (CSFs) of frugal innovation (FI) based on its determinants.

Design/methodology/approach

The study integrates interpretive structural modeling (ISM), the Kano model and quality function deployment (QFD), applying the proposed model in a power company where 40 experts and employees contributed to data collection.

Findings

The analysis using the Kano Model identified four prioritized FI determinants. By considering these determinants and employing ISM and QFD techniques, the CSFs were prioritized. The results from the data analysis based on ISM and QFD techniques revealed three prioritized CSFs.

Practical implications

Based on the findings, the selected power company should concentrate on the level one CSFs of FI, which include environmental sustainability, social sustainability and logistics, to facilitate the implementation of FI considering the prioritized determinants of laws, appropriate structure, management support and organizational capabilities.

Originality/value

This is the first case of prioritizing the CSFs of FI based on its determinants. Furthermore, the proposed integrative approach of ISM-Kano-QFD sets this paper apart from existing literature.
