Stroke frequently causes upper limb impairment, limiting function and independence. Current research highlights a need to consider advanced technologies in rehabilitation to enhance motor recovery. Intensive rehabilitation combining Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES), Tyromotion technology and traditional Occupational Therapy may enhance recovery through repetitive, task-specific training. This case study explores the effectiveness of integrating these approaches in an intensive program for a chronic stroke survivor.

To evaluate the impact of an intensive upper limb rehabilitation program – combining FES, Tyromotion technology and traditional Occupational Therapy – on improving motor function and enhancing functional independence in a chronic stroke survivor.

This case study involved a stroke survivor, nine months post-stroke, with upper limb impairment. The participant completed a 40-h rehabilitation program over four weeks, incorporating Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES), Tyromotion technology and Occupational Therapy. Progress was measured using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) and Tyromotion assessments.

Post-rehabilitation, the participant demonstrated improvements in motor function and functional independence. The COPM showed enhanced performance and satisfaction in daily tasks. Tyromotion assessments revealed better motor function, while FES facilitated improved muscle activation.

This case study highlights the potential of integrating FES, Tyromotion technology and traditional OT in intensive upper limb rehabilitation for chronic stroke survivors. The combined approach led to measurable improvements in motor function and functional independence, suggesting its efficacy in enhancing recovery and promoting long-term rehabilitation outcomes.

The integration of these approaches may enable clinicians to offer more personalised, technology-assisted rehabilitation. This approach has the potential to improve motor recovery and functional independence in stroke survivors. Future research could explore broader applicability and effectiveness.
