Purpose

This study examines the relationship between green human resource management (GHRM) practices and organisational citizenship behaviour towards the environment (OCBE), with corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a mediating variable, using the ability–motivation–opportunity framework.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data were collected from employees working in Indian Information Technology (IT) companies and analysed using structural equation modelling. The study analysed 393 valid responses.

Findings

The results show that GHRM practices significantly and positively influence OCBE. CSR is found to mediate the relationship between GHRM and OCBE.

Originality/value

The study offers empirical evidence from the Indian IT sector and highlights CSR as an important mechanism through which GHRM practices enhance employees' voluntary pro-environmental behaviour.
