Sri Lanka promotes energy efficiency

The Sri Lankan Ministry of Industry and Commerce is running a program to save energy in industries, including those belonging to the textile sector. Based on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, the initiative is aimed at helping local companies to enhance their energy efficiency and cut down the cost of production.

The project targets a 10 per cent reduction in industrial energy consumption. A total of 16 Sri Lankan companies are undergoing energy audits this year under the first stage of the program.

After the audit, a report will be prepared for each factory that will include recommendations for saving energy.

This is important. According to the Central Bank, Sri Lanka’s power demand is increasing by 7-8 per cent annually.
