Proving the technology

In June 1994, Lucas Aerospace was awarded a contract to supply the complete electrical system on the Bombardier Global Express ultra long-range business jet. The system features variable frequency power generation coupled with advanced automated power management; it is the first application of a variable frequency system on a turbofan-powered aircraft and pioneered a change to the industry standard. In 1998 and 1999, the Global Express received Transport Canada, FAA and JAA type certification making the variable frequency system the first ever to be certified on a civil jet aircraft. Additionally, the Lucas Aerospace variable frequency power system used on the Global Express fully demonstrated that all the industry standard requirements are met over the whole speed range of the newest generation of engines coming into service.
