Nearly a solution

How do you stand on the subject of "quick and dirty" solutions. We had a situation recently where a particular product gave pretty good, though not perfect, results in addressing a situation we had. Half of my staff thought"Great, this does most of what we want, and we can live without the rest. The few disadvantages we can work around or live with". The other half thought "It's a shame but this doesn't meet our requirements. We must keep looking for an 'elegant' solution that meets the specification". Of course, they were both right. In the end we went for this nearly-solution because it was relatively cheap and gave us most of the functionality we wanted. Crucially, we didn't think that it restricted our choice for a more complete solution were we to find one. We haven't yet!
