Discusses the adoption of CADCAM techniques by US manufacturers in the struggle for business survival with reference to case examples. Argues that CADCAM software offers valuable advantages over traditional design/manufacturing methods, principally lack of mistakes in initial production, and the reduction of both decision and design times by drastic amounts. Concludes that the attribute of speed which makes CADCAM such an advance is what is required by US companies to stay alive.
