Tales for Change: Using Storytelling to Develop People and Organisations

Margaret ParkinKogan Page£18.99ISBN: 0749441062

Storytelling has always been a sophisticated art form, used to pass on history and culture as well as helping people cope with the unexpected and the changing. Stories can be used to re-frame and re-size problems and provide useful metaphors, for the boardroom, office and individual.

This book introduces the use of stories in such contexts and is designed to help managers, trainers, educators and coaches reinforce key messages or stimulate fresh thinking. The book includes 50 tried and tested tales that can be used in a change management context. These tales can be used to communicate ideas, aid memorable learning, encourage brainstorming sessions, develop training and reflection, as well as help those involved to cope with the stress of change, increase emotional intelligence levels, and increase creativity.

The stories themselves have either been specially written by the author or are carefully selected from all areas of learning and literature –everything from Greek mythology and Machiavelli to Charles Handy.

The tales are grouped under five main headings:

  • 1.

    dealing with change;

  • 2.

    being creative;

  • 3.

    leaders and teams;

  • 4.

    dealing with stress; and

  • 5.

    emotional intelligence.

Such an approach will not suit everyone, but I recommend this book as an introduction to an interesting concept … whether it turns into a useful guide is very much up to the reader.
