Help wanted
I recently had cause to use a "help" desk. I have a new laptop which I want to use for video-editing (editing from my DV camcorder). All the equipment in the chain – the camcorder, the PC and the end-recording DV VCR are Sony – so there should be no compatibility issues. The video-editing software on the Sony laptop was pre-loaded by Sony, so there should be no configuration problems. But, of course, it doesn't work. Being "clever"at computery things, I spent some time on setups, configs, etc. and tweaked it to the point where I could edit a movie – but not record it back to tape. So I e-mailed the Sony helpline. I have since had a series of e-mail exchanges where it is apparent that they think I am some ignorant new user (I had a previous Sony laptop on which I successfully edited many films). They keep asking me if the heads on the video recorder are clean and other non-technical,unhelpful things. So, I have about £5,000 of equipment that, so far, does not do the job for which it was purchased. Another example of "the quality revolution"?
