If music be ...

A recent survey undertaken in a university library suggests that about one-third of students would like absolute quiet while they study; another third would like some background noise; and one-third would like background music. This is not desperately interesting in itself (well, not to me anyway) but it serves as another reminder that assuming that people are "people" is dangerous – people are individuals with a wide range of attributes,desires, aspirations and behaviours. Planning for them all to act alike is a recipe for trouble.
