You've probably heard the old joke of … "What's the difference between a supermarket shopping trolley and a non-executive company director?"The answer … A shopping trolley has a mind of its own but you can get more food and drink into a non-exec. The role of the non-exec is coming into prominence in the wake of the US (and other) corporate scandals. How do we ensure that non-execs are truly impartial, and act on behalf of the mass of non-aligned shareholders? Does it need regulation? or simply higher-calibre non-execs? Answers, please.
