Those of you in the UK will know that there has been a "quiet revolution"in air travel over the last decade – with an increasing number of low-cost operators offering truly radical pricing levels compared to the "big boys". These big boys have had to respond but point out (and I have some degree of sympathy) that they have to operate a full schedule to both lucrative and marginal destinations. My point is that these newer operators are known as "no frills" airlines – they do not offer in-flight entertainment, food,drink, etc. (or if they do they make a charge for it). However, what travellers really want are "no thrills" airlines. Can we be re-assured that these cheaper operators can maintain their (very good) safety records in the long-term? Is their productivity that much better than the former big boys(relative sizes are changing fast) that on substantially lower fares they can maintain the investment in maintenance and new equipment?
