Trust without paper

Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital NHS Trust has successfully used face-to-face IT training to help transform two of its intensive care units (ICUs) into paper-free environments. The trust now wants to expand the system, which is based on the CareView software package, into another ICU next year. The original projects saw more than 200 ICU staff undergo mandatory training in the six week period prior to the system going live. A variety of courses and methods were used, including introductory IT training for non-PC literate staff, courses for super users, and audio-cassette training for nursing staff. In addition, busy medical specialists were given one-to-one tuition, and all employees were offered access to workstations on which to practise. The CareView system is currently being integrated with bedside equipment such as ventilators, and the possibility of refresher training courses is also being mooted.
