CINPAR2016–strengthening and repair of structures

José Fonseca de Oliveira Correia, born in 1984 in Peso da Régua, Portugal, is Researcher of Optics and Experimental Mechanics Laboratory (LOME) of INEGI/UP and CONSTRUCT/FEUP (Portugal). He is also Invited Professor at the Structural Mechanics section in the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra. He obtained the BSc (2007) and MSc (2009) Degrees in Civil Engineering by the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. He is Specialist in Steel and Composite (steel and concrete) Construction by the University of Coimbra in 2010. He has a PhD Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Porto in 2015. He is also Co-author of more than 30 papers in the most relevant scientific journals devoted to engineering materials and structures and 80 proceedings in international and national conferences, congresses and workshops. He is a Member of Scientific and Professional Organizations, such as Ordem dos Engenheiros, Associação Portuguesa de Construção Metálica e Mista (CMM), and Associação para a Conservação e Manutenção de Pontes (ASCP). He is Co-chair of TC12 of European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS). His current research interests are: behaviour to fatigue and fracture of materials and structures (steel and aluminum, riveted and bolted connections, pressure vessels, old steel bridges, wind turbine towers, offshore structures); probabilistic fatigue modeling of metallic materials (including statistical evaluation, size-effect, cumulative damage, confounded data); probabilistic design of glass structural elements; mechanical behavior of materials and wooden structures (connections and characterization of ancient structures); mechanical and chemical characterization of old mortars and masonry structures.

Abilio M.P. de Jesus, born in 1973 in Oliveira de Azeméis, Portugal, is Auxiliary Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering from the University of Porto (FEUP) since 2014, after 18 years of teaching activity at the Department of Engineering of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Vila Real, Portugal. He is also Researcher at the Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (INEGI) and is integrated in the Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transports and Aeronautics (LAETA). He obtained the BSc (1996) and MSc (1999) Degrees in Mechanical Engineering by the University of Porto and the PhD Degree in Mechanical Engineering by the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro in 2004. He is Co-author of more than 100 papers in national and international scientific journals and more than 200 papers presented in both national and international conferences. A total of 120 documents in SCOPUS and an h-index of 16 show the consistency and visibility of the research work that has been developed in the fields of fatigue and fracture of materials and structures. The recent edition of the Structural Integrity Book series, the nomination for the ESIS TC12 and the new European Project, FASTCOLD, award his research excellency.

Humberto Varum is Full Professor at the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Portugal. Since October 2010, he is Honorary Lecturer at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, University College of London (UCL), London, UK. Since July 2016, he is Visiting Professor at the College of Civil Engineering, Fuzhou University, Fujian, China. He has been Seconded National Expert to the European Commission in the period July 2009 to August 2010, at the ELSA laboratory, Joint Research Centre, European Commission, Italy. He is Integrated Member of CONSTRUCT research unit: Institute of R&D in Structures and Construction. Since May 2015, he is Member of the Directorate Body of the Construction Institute of the University of Porto. He is Member of the National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), since 2009, and Expert Member of the ICOMOS’s International Scientific Committee of Earthen Architectural Heritage (ISCEAH). He is Member of the PROTERRA Iberian-American Network, since 2012. He has participated to post-earthquake field reconnaissance missions, in particular to L’Aquila (Italy, 2009), Lorca (Spain, 2011), Emilia-Romagna (Italy, 2012), Gorkha (Nepal, 2015) and Puebla (Mexico, 2017). His research experience combines large-scale earthquake testing and non-linear analytical modeling of structural systems. His main research interests include assessment, strengthening and repair of structures, structural health monitoring, structural testing and modeling, earthquake engineering, earth construction rehabilitation and seismic strengthening. He has coordinated and participated in several national and international research projects. He has supervised Master and PhD studies in the field of structural characterization and seismic retrofitting of structures. He has co-authored over 400 publications in international peer reviewed scientific journals, books and conference proceedings, in the fields of earthquake engineering, assessment and strengthening of structures, and built heritage conservation and retrofitting.

Xavier Romão is Assistant Professor at the Structural Engineering Division of the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and an Invited Lecturer in several national and international courses on vulnerability and risk assessment. He is Member of ICOMOS Portugal and National Delegate of the International Scientific Committee on Risk Preparedness (ICORP) of ICOMOS. He is also Member of the Board of the Portuguese Society of Earthquake Engineering, an Expert Member of the Working Group “Disaster Loss Data in the EU” and a Member of the Working Group 249-ISC of RILEM “Non destructive in situ strength assessment of concrete.” His research activities address the fields of performance–based deterministic and probabilistic methods for the risk and safety assessment of existing and historical constructions. He has been involved in several national and international research projects in these fields and has authored and co-authored over 100 publications in international and national journals and conferences.

Rui Calçada is Full Professor of the Civil Engineering Department of Faculty Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), Head of the Structural Division; President of IC–Institute of Construction from FEUP. Academic background: Civil Engineer Degree from FEUP (1992); Master Degree in Civil Engineering Structures from FEUP (1995); PhD Degree from University of Porto in Civil Engineering field (2003). He has 20 years of relevant experience. Main research interest/expertise include: advanced models for train-infrastructure dynamic interaction; wayside (track, bridges, transition zones) and on-board condition monitoring systems; advanced algorithms for condition monitoring systems. He has been Principal Investigator of 12 research projects and member of the team of 10 research projects in the area of railways; Supervisor of 16 PhD theses; Author of more than 300 scientific and technical publications. Other relevant information: he has served as the Director of the PhD program iRail-Innovation in railway systems and technologies; and Member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Railway Technology. He has been responsible for the participation of FEUP on European projects CAPACITY4RAIL, MAXBE, IN2RAIL, MRISE and SHIFT2RAIL Joint Undertaking.
