THE LUBRICATION OF WIRE ROPES CAN always be a problem unless correct equipment is employed, but when these ropes are in the pit, or used for a pit cage guide rope, most conventional methods are difficult to employ or impossible to fit. We recently came across an instance where lubrication of cage guide ropes is particularly important because they are always very wet and can soon reach the red rust stage, unless correct lubrication is carried out. In this case, the rope smith concerned has devised a method of oiling these ropes that should be of practical value to many other rope smiths who have to contend with similar conditions. The rope smith concerned is Mr. S. Laffan at the Oakdale Colliery, Nr. Blackwood, Monmouthshire, and the description we give is published by permission of the National Coal Board. The equipment is easily made in any pit workshop.
