Purpose

This study aims to investigate the influence of granular graphite on the braking performance of copper-based friction materials based on the development requirements for brake pad materials in high-speed trains.

Design/methodology/approach

Copper-based friction materials with different granular graphite contents were prepared by powder metallurgy. The structure of granular graphite was characterized. The friction and wear properties of the friction materials were tested, and the morphologies and structures of the worn surfaces were examined.

Findings

Slight structural changes in granular graphite significantly affected its friction and wear properties. When the degree of graphitization decreased, the microcrystalline structure of the granular graphite changed, and the porosity between the granular graphite and the copper matrix increased. As the degree of graphitization decreased, granular graphite on the friction surface was more likely to be damaged and oxidized. Consequently, graphite cannot effectively protect the friction surface, leading to a higher wear rate.

Originality/value

The influence of granular graphite on the properties of copper-based friction materials was studied, providing a reference for the selection of lubricating materials for brake pad materials used in high-speed trains.
