Professor I. Aoki and his research team of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Kanagawa University,have developed a combination forging/cutting machining system for manufacturing small metallic parts. A wide range of workpieces from round wires to 3D shapes can be produced by combined shearing and forging, while products of complicated shapes can be produced with various cutting tools. The machining time will differ with the shape of the workpiece, but is reportedly less than one-half of that involved with conventional systems.
