British Gear Association announces software development for gear stressKeywords: British Gear Association

One of many highlights of the British Gear Association's year has been the production of software for "The Analysis of Gear Stress and Transmission Error Analysis".

It includes the following features:

  • Automatic Finite Element Analysis for mesh stiffness of each gear.

  • Interactive input of "micro-geometry", mounting and operating conditions for Tooth Contact Analysis.

  • Automatic Tooth Contact analysis for contact and bending stress and transmission error in one of two modes.

It takes account of:

  • Tooth contact and bending compliances for all teeth engaged.

  • Assembly misalignment.

  • All geometric contribution to the gear geometry and alignment.

The BGA's Technical Executive Tom Marsh said the software was just one part of the Association Research Committee's many activities and was jointly funded by the British Gear Association's Research Committee and the DTI. It was produced by the Newcastle University Design Unit and several BGA companies who had trialled the program. It is intended to be used for design optimisation and refinement which is outside the capability of the gear stress analysis standard BS-ISO 6336, which is embodied in the BGA "Gear Geometry and Stress Analysis Programme", also commercially available. The gear geometry and stress analysis programmes, for use by designers and specifiers of cylindrical involute gearing, is now commercially available at very much reduced rates for BGA members.
