Oil in water continuous minitoring systems

Keywords: Oils, Water, Monitoring

Ionics have extended their range of continuous oil-in-water techniques to include a series of robust IR light scattering monitors (see Plate 6). There are models for both “clean” applications, such as cooling and condensate monitoring, and also “dirtier” industrial processes. A range of housings includes EExd enclosures for hazardous areas.

The IR scattering technique offers fast response to a wide range of insoluble oils. It is unaffected by soluble oils or sample colour. Industrial applications include final discharge to rivers, surface water run-off, re-injection water monitoring, hydrocyclones, boiler condensates and cooling waters, and separation discharges. The monitors give an instantaneous response to the presence of oil and other insoluble hydrocarbons between 0 and 1000 ppm at process temperatures to 100°C. Single and multi-range models are available.

Ionics assist users to choose the most appropriate technique taking into account process conditions such as pressure, temperature, flows and chemical compositions. The company specialises in sample handling and conditioning. Sample conditioning units for the new IR monitors can incorporate homogenisers to produce an even particle size and distribution within the sample. For heavier particles a solids removal cyclone is available to extract the heavier particles prior to conditioning.

Ionics IR oil-in-water monitors are easy to maintain and incorporate automatic cell cleaning, where oil and solid deposits are removed from the internal walls of the measuring cell without the use of detergents.

The full Ionics range of hydrocarbon monitors covers TOC, oxygen demand, oil in/on water. The company provides total system solutions including fully-equipped enclosures for remote sites and trailer-mounted units for short-term pilot evaluations prior to installation.
