Airframes in current aircraft and missiles are required to withstand extremes of temperature and high mechanical stresses, and bearings used as control surface hinges, flexible joints, pivot points, etc. must operate reliably under these conditions. Many air‐frame bearings required to carry heavy loads in small spaces must of necessity be journal or sleeve type and must oscillate without elaborate lubrication systems. Bearings, must, therefore, be self‐lubricating or relubricated during periodic maintenance. Typical operating conditions would be temperature from −90 to 1,500°F; bearing load of 25,000 lb/sq. in. reversing ; bearing surface speed of 8 to 10 ft/min, rate of oscillation might be 12 cycles/min.
