THE new British Insulated Callender's Cable copper rod rolling mill at Prescot handles nearly a quarter of the world's copper rod production. This fully automatic mill represents the results of combined effort by Brightside Foundry & Engineering Co. Ltd., and the B.I.C.C. engineers. The mill can convert 400 tons of copper bar into rod from 1/4 to 9/16 in. dia. in 1/16 in. steps, per day. A single bar about 4½ in. square x 4 ft. 6 in. long, and weighing between 255 and 275 lb. is reduced to 1,300 ft. of ¼ in. rod in 82 seconds. This is equal to some 23–30 long tons per hour or 2,000 tons per week on two daily 8½ hr. shifts.
