AS industrial production equipment is developed it becomes increasingly complicated because of the requirements for continuous operation and “built in” refinements such as automation, etc. As a result there is an increased need for the preventive maintenance of machines and their components including the bearings used in the machines. The avoidance of breakdowns during operation is desirable at costs that bear a reasonable relationship to the economic and other consequences of production stoppages. All repairs and replacements should preferably be carried out during stops that have been planned in advance.
