AN UNUSUAL use for grease occurred during the sliding into position of the Weaver Viaduct on the M56 North Cheshire Motorway. The scaffolding in the illustration measures about 135 feet by 35 feet by 60 feet high and is supported on normal 60 lb per yard rails. It had to be slid into position to support the anchor span of the in situ concrete bridge over the Weaver Navigation Canal during the construction. Grease was applied to the rails and the whole unit was slid laterally more than 40 feet into its new position with the aid of nine Tirfor pulling blocks, without any dismantling. The pulling capacity of these would not have been sufficient without the use of grease, which was Lacerta CL2X TF, from Walkers (Century Oils) Ltd. and this contains PTFE.
