THOSE of us who are fortunate enough to take delivery of a new car usually adhere very strictly to the maker's instructions on running‐in. We never exceed 30 m.p.h. for the first 200 or 300 miles, and never overload or shock load the engine for still greater mileages. This is correct procedure and has everything in its favour, but it must be remembered that unless the manufacturer has also been as “running‐in conscious” during the works enginetesting period—apart from all delivery runs etc. which intervene between factory and delivery, it is possible for damage to have taken place which careful running‐in, thereafter, will not repair.
