The sale of a petrol service station forecourt in a London borough had been agreed between one major petrol company to another subject to survey. However the site survey undertaken by independent consultants on behalf of the owner revealed contamination by petroleum products, in particular benzene, at an unacceptably high level of 2,800 ppm total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH).
