IN THE FIELD OF OIL ENGINE DESIGN great strides have been made and skills developed regarding the construction of the engine itself. However progress in developing associated equipment has not kept pace. This is especially true as regards providing cooling facilities for such engines, where certain practices are positively harmful to engine operation. Such cooling methods which are low in first cost, are in actual fact expensive in terms of overall cost over a period of years, due to high operating expenses, and the ensuing maintenance troubles. It is strange when one considers that about a third of the energy in the Diesel engine fuel is to be dissipated by the cooling system, that such scant attention has been paid to the selection of the best method of removing this heat for each particular application.
