Message from the TriboBR2018 guest editors for Industrial Lubrication and Tribology
The International Brazilian Conference on Tribology (TriboBR) series have provided along the years an international forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange state-of-the-art developments in Tribology. The conferences aim to help preserve the environment and boost economic development by reducing friction losses, increasing energy efficiency, reducing undesired wear and optimizing moving contacts’ performance.
The First International Brazilian Conference on Tribology (TriboBR 2010) was held in Rio de Janeiro, in November 2010. That meeting was undoubtedly a milestone for the Brazilian Tribology, providing, along with other aspects, high-quality discussions on tribological issues. The Third International Brazilian Conference on Tribology, held in Florianópolis in 2018 represented this successful conference series’ continuity. Most of the previous events' positive aspects remained valid, including the increase in industry-academia and academia-academia interactions, the consolidation of emerging groups, and the further nucleation of new groups. The set of plenary and invited speakers was remarkable, and the quality of the previous editions attracted a growing number of tribologists from other countries. These signs indicate that the Brazilian tribological community has spread and matured, embracing new leading tribologists, to remain active independently of the oscillations in the economy. As a result, TriboBR, 2018 had 73 oral presentations and 42 poster presentations, with participants from 11 different countries.
The conference was chaired by Prof Roberto Martins de Souza and co-chaired by Prof Henara Lillian Costa. The other members of the organizing committee were Dr Adilson Luiz Manke, Prof Aloisio Nelmo Klein, Dr Carlos Eduardo Pinedo, Prof Cherlio Scandian, Prof Cristiano Binder, Prof Giuseppe Pintaúde, and Prof José Daniel Biasoli de Mello. The endorsement by the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) and by Tribonet contributed to the success of this third edition.
All the extended abstracts presented at the conference were evaluated by a TriboBR2018 editorial team responsible for pre-selecting potential manuscripts to be submitted to a special issue in the journal Industrial Lubrication and Tribology. The guest editors for this special issue were Prof Henara Lillian Costa and Prof. Giuseppe Pintaúde. From 15 pre-selected manuscripts, 10 completed all the necessary steps during the review process and are published in this special issue. They represent the substantial contribution of TriboBR2018 to new areas related to lubrication, wear-resistant materials, wear measurement techniques, and surface engineering, showing close relationship with important industrial fields such as rail transportation, combustion engines, and oil and gas, industry.
