Purpose

This study aims to analyze the frictional properties and temperature changes of carbon fibre reinforced silicon carbide composites (C/C-SiC) materials and promote the application of C/C-SiC materials.

Design/methodology/approach

The temperature and coefficient of friction (COF) of friction pair composed of C/C-SiC were examined by a TM-I-type reduced-scale inertial braking dynamometer. The thermo-mechanically coupled model of friction pair is established to study the brake disc temperature using ADINA software.

Findings

The average COF varies from 0.338 to 0.518 with the change of braking conditions. The braking pressure increased from 0.38 MPa to 0.75 MPa, and the average COF increased by 53% at 120 km/h and 7% at 200 km/h. The braking speed increased from 120 km/h to 200 km/h, the maximum temperature (MT) of the disc surface increased from 430°C to 685°C, the total duration of the temperature zone exceeding 320°C increased from 20 s to 48 s, the MT increase caused by the increase of speed was 121∼197°C and the MT increase caused by the increase of braking pressure was 30∼105°C.

Originality/value

The changes in COF and temperature of C/C-SiC friction pair are revealed, providing a theoretical reference for the popularization C/C-SiC material.
