Diesel engine catalytic converter cuts summer smog
Keywords: Catalyst,Siemens
Siemens and three HGV manufacturers have recently completed a two-year trial on a diesel vehicle catalytic converter, known as SINOX (Siemens NOx). In practical driving conditions the ceramic catalyst is claimed to reduce emissions of the ozone precursor substances, nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 70 per cent. Unburnt hydrocarbon emissions also fell by 80 per cent and soot particles by 33 per cent, without compromising engine output. The trials, partially funded by the Bavarian Environment Ministry, involved eight HGV vehicles covering almost 1.5 million km. They demonstrated that the DM 10,000 cost price could be recovered by DM 15,000 fuel saving over two years.
