New emission standards for California

Keyword Emissions

The California Air Resources Board have announced a new package of emission standards to run from 2004 through 2010. Mini-vans, pick-up trucks and sport-utility vehicles up to 3,855 kg. will then have to meet the limits imposed for passenger cars. Fleet average standards have been extended and tightened; "fleets" including all new vehicles which a car-maker sells each year in California. A reduction of 75 per cent is to be imposed for nitrogen oxide emissions from low and ultra-low emission vehicles. Also, emission control durability standards are to be extended from 100,000 to 120,000 miles for all passenger cars and other vehicles up to 3,855 kg. Reductions are also required in the levels of evaporative emissions from hoses, gasoline lines and valves. Partial zero-emission vehicle credits have been created for vehicles that achieve near-zero emission levels, such as hybrid vehicles and those powered by fuel-cells.
