CoSteel Sheerness, one of Europe's leading rod and bar steel producers, has retro-fitted Dyn-Metal bearings to their Fuchs electric arc furnace to improve its campaign life (Plate 1). The original thin-wall gimbal bearings did not provide adequate depth of wear. For a minimum required bearing life of two years, Dyn-Metal has redesigned the bearings to incorporate thick-wall bearings in a special wear resistant bronze with graphite lubrication.

The 400 tonne travelling shaft furnace, which operates 24 hours per today, seven days a week, tilts through a 300 angle five times an hour on two sets of gimbal bearings of 380 and 220mm bore diameter. The operating environment for the bearings is dusty with temperatures up to 100°C.
Dyn-Metal selected their aluminium bronze grade PAN ALl 0-GF for its load supporting capacity and wear resistance. The distribution of the graphite pockets, which extend throughout the bearing wall, was arranged to give optimum lubrication of the bearing surfaces under intense steel plant operating conditions.
The Fuchs furnace, which was installed in 1992, was designed for minimum emissions and maximum thermal efficiency and is one of the most efficient and lowest cost electric arc furnaces in the world.
