Welcome to the first issue of Industrial Lubrication and Tribology in 2001.

I hope that we will continue this year to provide a good selection of papers covering the widely different aspects of the world of tribology and lubrication.

In this issue, Klaus Groth of Deutsche Carbone presents his work on the use of solid lubricants in electric motor brushes. Hakan Kaleli from the Yildiz Teknik Universitesi in Instanbul reports on investigations into performance changes achieved when secondary additive treatment is used in a fully formulated crankcase oil. Sven Berg of the Lulea University of Technology in Sweden provides an interesting insight into the importance of correct sampling techniques being used in condition monitoring. Finally in this issue Yanchun Han from the Chinese Academy of Sciences together with colleagues from the University of Kaiserslautern uses microfriction to study the differences between various fillers in a PTFE matrix.

The varied nature of these articles should provide interest to all our readers. However, your editor always welcomes comments on papers published. This is especially true if you have some research work which will complement or indeed challenge the conclusions reached by our authors.
